MPD is excited to bring architecture+design workshops for kids to Boston’s MetroWest area!

What is this academy about?

What does it mean to design and what makes for a “better” design? What can design teach us about how we experience and imagine the world around us? What can we learn about the past and the future through historical and new designs that we imagine for ourselves and others? How do we share and communicate our ideas about the built environment?

These are the kinds of interactive problems that students are encouraged to think about and experience at the MPD Junior Design Academy.

Why architecture + design? An architect is an example of a designer who conceptualizes, problem solves, and engages with the “why” behind the design of a physical environment that can be as small as a door knob or as large as an entire city. Much of what the students will experience in the academy will reflect the training that takes place in a design studio or architecture school, albeit tailored to our students’ age range.

Who is this academy for?

Any 9~12 year olds. The fall 2025 workshops are specially created for this age range, but workshops for other ages are forthcoming.

How many students are in a single workshop?

Each workshop will be capped to 12 students.

How is the academy structured?

There are 8 workshop sessions that are organized thematically. Parents may choose to sign up for just 1 workshop session, multiple sessions or all 8 sessions. Each workshop is a 2-hour session where parents drop off their kids.

An additional (“9th”) workshop will take place in the form of a design studio critique (a “crit” or “pin-up” as we call it in architecture school). This final “micro” crit will be a culmination of the work completed during the workshops. During this “micro” crit, every student who has participated in a workshop (whether single or multiple) will have the opportunity to present their work to their peers, family, friends, and guest reviewers — we have some exciting subject-matter experts lined up as guest reviewers! It is a very special opportunity for students to present and showcase their work to a broader audience.

What will students learn and do in the workshops?

The interactive, hands-on workshops are designed to help students:

  • Learn basic principles of architectural and spatial representation (e.g., scale, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, structure) and design processes (e.g., ideation, iteration, sketching, model making)

  • Begin to appreciate histories of design. Every workshop session will include a history component

  • Develop listening, observing, problem solving, and design thinking skills. Every workshop will involve a design challenge, “micro” lectures given by the instructor, and other design activities appropriate for this age group

  • Express their concepts through both visual and written forms of communication. During each workshop, students will be asked to supplement their designs with written narratives and explanations

  • Foster presentation skills through presenting in front of their peers, parents/caregivers, and guest reviewers at the final “micro” crit

When and where are the workshops held?

The fall 2025 session will run from 9/25~11/13.

MPD Junior Design Academy workshops will be held at the historic Sherborn 1858 Town House (3 Sanger Street, Sherborn, MA), every Thursday 4.00-6.00pm.

Final “micro” crits/presentations will take place on Thursday November 20, 2025 (time TBD) at the Sherborn 1858 Town House.

Who will be leading the workshops?

Every workshop is led by Dr. Melany Park, principal and founder of Melany Park Design (MPD). An educator, designer, and mom, Melany received her PhD in Architecture from Harvard University and a Masters in Design Studies from Harvard Graduate School of Design. She currently teaches at the Boston Architectural College (BAC) and has held teaching positions at Harvard Graduate School of Design and National University of Singapore.

What makes these workshops different?

Each workshop is uniquely designed with “micro” lectures that combine direct instruction with free thinking and inquiry-based learning. This means that unlike other art classes that tend to be craft-based, do-it-yourself models, students will receive training on processes, histories, definitions, and concepts of design through a bespoke curriculum. Students will also be encouraged to use their presentation skills in narrating their ideas to not only their peers and family but also to guest reviewers.

Are you able to host this academy at other locations?

We are always open to suggestions for hosting the academy at additional venues. Please reach out with venue requests or suggestions at info@melanyparkdesign.com.
